Tom Proctor

  Racing Stable

Born: April 21, 1956 in Gilmer, Texas
Residence: Louisville, KY and Oldsmar, FL
Family: children Willard and Heather

Public trainer Tom Proctor ranks among the nation’s top trainers by earnings - 32nd in 2012, 26th in 2013, 29th in 2014, 31st in 2015, 61st in 2016, and 43rd in 2017. He has won 1,341 races in his career (as of 11.4.19), one which began, officially, when he took out his trainers license in 1978. Proctor is the son of the late Willard Proctor, a renowned trainer, and he is from a true racing family. Father and son trained for many years for Leonard Lavin's Glen Hill Farm, and Tom continues to do so. Tom's brother, Hap, managed the 325-acre Glen Hill Farm in Ocala, FL, until 2011. His uncles, Jack Proctor, ran their family farm in Texas, and Allen Proctor, managed Glen Hill until 1991.

The relationship between the Proctor family and Glen Hill has been, and continues to be, a strong one. First father Willard, and then Tom, were private trainers for Glen Hill, until Tom went public in 2005. He continues to train for them, their horses making up approximately 40% of the stable. They won their first Breeders' Cup race together, the Distaff with One Dreamer in 1994.

It has been said through the years that he has often duplicated his father by winning the same stakes races, “Something I do is if Dad’s won a stakes and I win the same stakes I put the pictures together. That’s happened a little more than you might think.”

His first winner was I'm Smokin, whom he considers the fastest he has ever trained. The California-bred sprinter won 14 of 44 career starts, including three stakes, and earned $326,395. He was good enough to have a $100,000 race for 2-year-olds named after him at Del Mar.
